Approval for Selly Oak Student Development

John Baggott

Tyler Parkes has secured full planning permission on behalf of our Clients, C. Faulkner & Sons Ltd, for the erection of a new purpose built student accommodation development in the Selly Oak area of Birmingham.

The development is of a contemporary design standing at 3 storeys in height along the street frontage, and 2 storeys at the rear. 54 generously sized student bedrooms will be provided, each with its own en-suite facilities, within 14 cluster apartments, each of which accommodates shared kitchen and lounge facilities. A communal landscaped garden is also provided.

Working in conjunction with Russell Overs Architects, Tyler Parkes has taken the lead on all planning and related matters in respect of the application and has successfully presented the case for this new high quality, purpose built, student accommodation in this highly sustainable location.

The application and its successful outcome followed pre-application engagement with Birmingham City Council Officers, which continued throughout the Officers’ consideration of the application. Despite a request for S106 Contributions in respect of highways matters, we successfully presented the case that the request failed the statutory tests in the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Regulations 2010. Officers subsequently agreed and the request for S106 contributions was withdrawn.

The application was Approved by the City Council’s Planning Committee on 29th August 2019.
