Meriden Hall
Meriden Hall, West Midlands
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
After a long-running planning saga with Solihull MBC we were successful in obtaining planning permission for our client, Pertemps, for a substantial extension to their office headquarters at Meriden Hall, a Grade II* Listed Building.
The very modern design of the extension contrasts with the existing historic Hall and was agreed with Historic England. Materials include glass rain screen cladding and frameless aluminium windows with tinted glass bonded to the outside of the frame to provide a simple ‘glass box’ appearance. The extension was completed in late 2017; it is now occupied and is a most attractive and striking building.
The site lies in the Green Belt and the Council had previously refused permission for a new detached office building in the grounds of the Hall. An appeal was dismissed but after a High Court challenge this decision was quashed.
In the meantime, two alternative schemes to extend the Hall had also been refused by the Council. An appeal was lodged against the second refusal and the Inspector agreed with our submissions that the proposal was acceptable under Green Belt policy. The appeal was allowed and planning permission granted. Listed Building Consent had been obtained separately.
